Heute wollten wir den 17 Kilometer entfernten Eisrand vor dem Paso del
Viento erreichen. Das war das Tagesziel. Inzwischen gehen wir fast bei
jedem Wetter, und so sind wir auch heute morgen im Schneetreiben bei fünf
Meter Sichtweite aufgebrochen. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, vielleicht doch
noch einen Blick auf unsere beiden Supergipfel zu erhaschen, ging gegen
Null. Auch ein Segelversuch scheiterte, weil wir ohne Sicht ständig in
Schneewehen fuhren und darum mehr lagen als segelten. Die Tatsache, dass
wir unseren letzten Tag auf dem Eis im dichten Schneegestöber bei sturem
Pulkaziehen verbringen würden, vermieste uns beiden ziemlich die Laune.
Doch dann passierte das Unerwartete. Es riss plötzlich auf, die Sonne
zeigte sich, und es zog ein Wolkenloch auf die Berge zu. Das alles geschah
in wenigen Minuten. Tja und auf ein Mal stand er vor uns, der Cerro Torre
und all die ungeheuerlichen Granitzähne, die auf dieser Welt ihres
Gleichen suchen! Solch ein Augenblick ist der Grund, warum wir sowas tun.

Türmen. Links daneben Torre Eger, Punta Herron und Cerro Standhardt.
Es war wirklich unverschämtes Glück, welches wir heute hatten, denn uns
gelangen nicht nur schöne Fotos mit und ohne uns vom Cerro Torre. Wir
konnten anschliessend vor dieser Kulisse sogar segeln. Und auch das haben
wir ausgiebig im Bildern dokumentiert. Der Fitz Roy allerdings blieb in
den Wolken verborgen.
Wir sind nun am Eisrand angekommen und werden morgen mit dem Abstieg nach
El Chaltén beginnen. Dabei wechseln wir von der West- auf die Ostseite der
beiden Berge. Der Abstieg wird noch einmal viel Kraft kosten, denn wieder
müssen wir jeden Weg mindestens drei Mal gehen. Drei bis vier Tage haben
wir für die Strecke einkalkuliert. Doch nach diesem grandiosen Tag habe
ich eigentlich gar keine rechte Lust, von hier wegzugehen. Zu viel gibt es
hier noch zu sehen und zu fotografieren.

Today we wanted to reach the 17 km away ice edge near the Paso del
Viento. That was the day's destination.
And after all this days we don’t really care about bad weather anymore - we just leave and keep going – like this morning when we started in heavy snow flurry.
The probability to catch a look at our two “super summits” went against zero.
A sailing attempt failed too, because without view we drove constantly in
snow banks and fell more than we sailed. We are in a quite bad mood because of the fact that on our last day at the Icefield we had to pull the pulka in bad weather instead of sailing with nice north wind under a blue sky!
But then the unexpected happened: suddenly it tore on, the sun showed itself and a cloud hole moved toward to the mountain. All that happened within a few minutes. And at one time the Cerro Torre stood before us with it unique “granite teeth”! This is a moment when you realize, why you are doing an expedition like that.
It was really unbelievable luck which we had today because we could take great photos of the Cerro Torre and we even could sail in front of the mountain. The only downer was that Mr. Fitz Roy remained hiding in the clouds.
We have now arrived at the ice edge and tomorrow we begin with the descent down to
El Chalten. We will switch from the west to the aast side of the two mountains. The descent will cost a lot of strength because we got to go each way at least three times again. We calculate three to four days for this. But after this grandiose day I actually don't really want to leave from here. There is too much to see and photograph.
