MANASLU. La montaña del espíritu...

El Manaslu es el antiguo pico XXX del servicio cartográfico de la India, y en un principio se le dio el nombre de Kutang por ser la montaña más alta del distrito con ese nombre. Manaslu es de origen sánscrito y deriva de manasa que significa “espíritu ó alma”. Así Manaslu es la montaña del espíritu. Localizada cuarenta millas al este del Annapurna, Manaslu es la octava montaña más alta del planeta y domina el macizo de Gurkha. Cuenta la leyenda, que en la aldea nepalí de Sama, que se encuentra situada al pie de esta montaña, creen que el dios Kambung habita en su cima. Parece ser que este dios se enfadó bastante con los japoneses que intentaron subirla en 1953 y acabaron pagándolo los nepalíes, con una avalancha que destruyó su templo de más de 300 años, además de una epidemia de viruela y otras enfermedades. A pesar de la oposición de los lugareños que, en 1954 amenazaron con cortar cabezas, el dios Kambung permitió al fin que el japonés Imanishi y el sherpa Gyalzen hicieran cumbre el 9 de mayo de 1956. El solitario y malhumorado dios, consintió por fin compartir su cima.
