Yesterday's intense cold proved an acute learning curve for everyone. Some frost injuries to fingers and toes were revealed which have inevitably altered the course of our objective. I have no intention of taking the team higher into colder and more committing terrain and decided a recovery day was the best course of action, so six of us headed off to the moraine debris at the foot of the Rabot Glacier for an afternoon jaunt. Always concerned about polar bears, we divided our weoponry amongst the divided entities. A reindeer foraging on the valley edge looked suspiciously like a polar bear through the diffused overcast light.
Tomorrow we ski back down the valley to enable an easy vehicle return to Longyearbyen should anyone wish to, an option discussed by some of the team after yesterday's brutal cold.
The cold played equal havoc on the stoves and I've spent much of the evening tinkering and tuning but they're now all purring like sleepy tigers.
